Sidonian Harbor, Tyre

About

Ancient writers called Tyre's north-facing harbor the Sidonian Harbor, or Port of Astronoe, and it worked as the city's main commercial port straight through the Roman period. Strabo and Arrian, writing in the first and second centuries CE, both describe Tyre as a city with two harbors, this one enclosed and defensible against enemy fleets. Merchant ships loaded grain, cedar timber, and Tyre's famous purple-dyed cloth from its quays. Archaeologists have traced ancient breakwater foundations beneath the modern fishing harbor of Sour, which still occupies roughly the same spot.
