About
Cassander sited his new city on the Thermaic Gulf in 315 BCE precisely for its natural harbor, and the port grew into one of the busiest on the Aegean's northern rim under Roman rule. It anchored the western end of the overland Via Egnatia route to Byzantium, moving grain, timber and goods between the Aegean and inland Macedonia. In 117 CE it was still Macedonia's primary maritime gateway.
