Province, 117 CE

Cyprus

Senatorial province (proconsul)Capital: Paphos

A small senatorial province run by a proconsul, taken back from Marc Antony's old grant to Cleopatra after Actium and folded permanently into the settlement of 22 BCE. An earthquake around 76/77 CE had badly damaged Paphos; by 117 imperial funds had rebuilt its sanctuary of Aphrodite, the island's most visited shrine since Homer's day.
