Province, 117 CE
Galatia et Cappadocia
Imperial province, consular legateCapital: Ancyra
Two provinces run as one since Vespasian, and by far the empire's most important eastern staging ground in 117 — the legions at Satala and Melitene on this province's eastern edge fed Trajan's whole Armenian and Mesopotamian campaign. Ancyra's Res Gestae inscription, a full copy of Augustus's own account of his reign carved into a temple wall, still stood for every visitor to read.
