Province, 117 CE
Lusitania
Western Iberia, roughly modern Portugal and Spanish Extremadura, settled with veterans of Augustus's Cantabrian Wars at its capital Emerita Augusta — 'the veterans' city' — around 25 BCE. The theatre and amphitheatre built for those retired legionaries were already a century old by 117 and still in use.
Created in Augustus's 27 BCE division of Hispania; its veterans' colony at Emerita Augusta was founded shortly after, c. 25 BCE.
