Two of Alexandria's five alphabetically named districts, most prominently the Delta quarter in the northeast, housed the largest Jewish community outside Judaea. Philo, writing around 38 CE, described a population dense enough to fill whole neighborhoods with synagogues, workshops, and self-governing courts. By August 117 CE this quarter's Jewish population had been massacred and its institutions gutted, the toll of the previous year's Kitos War revolt and its Roman suppression under Marcius Turbo.
