Gymnasium of Alexandria

About

Alexandria's Gymnasium ran for over a stadium, more than 180 meters, of colonnades along the city's central avenue. Strabo called it the most beautiful of all the city's public buildings, its courtyards shaded by groves and hosting the law courts as well as athletics. Alexandrian youths trained here for citizenship status that carried real legal weight under Roman rule. It remained a working civic center through Trajan's reign.
