Beirut Roman Baths

About

Augustus's veterans built these baths in the heart of Colonia Berytus during the 1st century AD. Bathers moved through four heated chambers warmed by a hypocaust, where furnaces pushed hot air beneath the floor through rows of terracotta pillars. The complex sat between the forum and the sea, serving the colony's Roman citizens for generations. Archaeologists uncovered the ruins in 1968, buried under Beirut's modern city center.
