About
Berytus grew around a natural harbor Phoenician sailors had used for over a thousand years before Rome arrived. After Augustus settled veterans there in 14 BC, Roman engineers deepened the basin and extended its seawalls to handle heavier trade. The port anchored the colony's economy, moving grain, timber, and goods along the Levantine coast. It stayed the city's commercial lifeline for centuries under Roman rule.
