About

Legionary troops garrisoned Burnum from the early Principate to the late 1st century CE, and soldiers from that garrison dedicated five surviving altars to Jupiter Optimus Maximus as beneficiarii. The fort sat on the road linking Aquileia to Dyrrachium, the shortest overland route from Italy to the Balkans. No structure of the beneficiarius post has ever been excavated; its existence is inferred from these votive stones. Traffic control on this corridor continued into Trajan's reign.
