Harbor of Apollonia

About

Apollonia served as Cyrene's outport from the city's founding, its anchorage sheltered behind a long stone breakwater built into the Mediterranean. Roman fleets used the harbor as a naval base guarding the Cyrenaican coast. Coastal subsidence has since dropped the ancient harbor works nearly 4 meters underwater, so much of what Roman sailors walked on in 117 CE now lies submerged and visible only through clear water.
