Province, 117 CE

Macedonia

Senatorial province (proconsul)Capital: Thessalonica

Once Alexander's homeland, a Roman province since 146 BCE — the oldest Roman foothold in the Greek-speaking world. The Via Egnatia, Rome's great east–west military road, crosses the whole province from the Adriatic to Thrace; Philippi, where Antony and Octavian crushed Caesar's assassins in 42 BCE, still sits on that road.
