The House of Amphitrite is one of Bulla Regia's semi-subterranean mansions, its lower rooms sunk underground and lit by a small open courtyard to escape the summer heat. A triclinium floor there carries a mosaic long nicknamed for Amphitrite, though scholars now read it as Venus rising from the sea flanked by tritons and fish. The house belongs to the 2nd-3rd century building boom that made Bulla Regia famous. Construction began decades after Trajan's death in 117 CE.
