Memmian Baths

About

Bulla Regia's largest bathing complex takes its name from Julia Memmia, daughter of a local consul, who funded its construction in the early third century. Bathers moved through a gymnasium, changing rooms, and a vaulted frigidarium. Excavators clearing the site between 1909 and 1924 uncovered a shell-shaped mosaic decorating one apse. Trajan's empire had already given way to the Severan dynasty by the time these baths opened.
