About

Apulum housed Dacia's schola speculatorum, a dedicated barracks for the governor's courier-scouts built inside the fortress of Legio XIII Gemina. A building inscription lists three centurions and two cornicularii overseeing twenty serving speculatores alongside five veterans of the corps. These men carried dispatches and gathered intelligence for the governor's office rather than answering to their legion's own chain of command. The post anchored courier traffic for Dacia, the newest province Trajan had added to the empire.
