Province, 117 CE
Achaia
Roman Greece — the old heartland of Classical civilization, ruled since 27 BCE from a city the Romans themselves had rebuilt: Corinth, razed by the Republic in 146 BCE and refounded as a colony a century later. Athens kept a special cultural prestige no governor's seat could match; Epirus in the northwest and the Aegean islands both fell under this same province's administration.
Organized as its own senatorial province in 27 BCE; Greece had already been under Roman control since Macedonia's conquest in 146 BCE.
Cities on the map
- Corinth — Provincial capital of Achaea, re-founded by Caesar over the ruins of the Greek city Rome had destroyed a century earlier.
- Athens — Under Rome but coasting on its glorious past. Hadrian would soon add his Library, arch, and Olympieion.
- Delphi — Sanctuary of Apollo — still a working oracle in 117 CE, though its reputation was fading.
