Province, 117 CE

Noricum

Imperial province, equestrian procuratorCapital: Virunum

A former client kingdom absorbed peacefully around 15 BCE, famous in antiquity for its iron — ferrum Noricum was the standard by which Roman writers judged sword steel. Virunum, its capital on the Zollfeld plain, never needed walls: Noricum's annexation was so uncontested it kept almost no permanent garrison.
