About
Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa rose around 108-110 CE as Trajan's new capital for conquered Dacia, replacing the old Dacian royal seat deeper in the mountains. Beneficiarii consularis staffed a station here, one of only three city-based beneficiarius posts recorded anywhere in Roman Dacia. A forum, amphitheater, and road network radiated out from this new colonia within a decade of the conquest. By 117 CE the city anchored Roman civil and military administration for the entire province.
