About
Siscia kept a beneficiarii consularis post running long after its legion marched off to the Danube frontier in the Flavian era. Soldiers such as Lucius Virilius Pupus dedicated altars here, filling the security gap left by departing troops at this Sava River crossing. The town's road-and-river junction made it a natural chokepoint for tax collection and travel control heading into the second century. Beneficiarii, river-fleet detachments, and passing units made up Siscia's visible Roman military presence for decades after the legion left.
