Cluj-Napoca

About

Roman forces built the castra at Napoca in 105-106 CE during Trajan's second Dacian campaign, and a milestone from nearby Aiton dated 108 CE records the road linking it to Potaissa. Beneficiarii consularis staffed a statio here, one of only three city-based posts recorded anywhere in Roman Dacia. The settlement rose to municipium status only later, under Hadrian in 124 CE. In 117 CE it still functioned chiefly as a fresh military and road hub in the empire's newest province.
