About

Trajan built a fort at Porolissum in 106 CE to guard the main pass through the Carpathians into newly conquered Dacia. Around 5,000 auxiliary troops transferred from Spain, Gaul, and Britain garrisoned the empire's new northern edge here. Beneficiarii detached from the governor's staff worked the road station at this crossing, the busiest gateway on the Dacian frontier. The fort later grew into the capital of the split-off province of Dacia Porolissensis.
