Province, 117 CE

Dacia

Imperial province, praetorian legateCapital: Sarmizegetusa

The empire's newest province, finished in 106 CE after Trajan's two hard-fought wars against King Decebalus — commemorated the same year on the 200-foot spiral relief of Trajan's Column in Rome. A gold rush followed almost immediately at Alburnus Maior in the Apuseni mountains; veteran colonies were still being planted when Trajan died eleven years later.
